Discovering South Africa is a unique experience, and is something that many people dream of doing during their lifetime. Whether your wish is to encounter African wildlife in its natural habitat, or be immersed in the colourful culture and traditions of the Rainbow Nation, there is much more to South Africa than meets the eye, so why not explore it for yourself?

At Bench Africa, our love of the region, as well as our long experience operating here, means that we've been able to single out some of the most spectacular sights the country has to offer and include them in our South African tours. Here we're showcasing a truly breathtaking vista: God's Window.

Stairway to heaven

God's Window forms part of Mpumalanga, which means 'the place where the sun rises' in Zulu (one of South Africa's 11 official languages). Situated in the east, Mpumalanga falls under the Drakensberg region of the Great Escarpment that encircles the Central Plateau, and wraps around the kingdom of Swaziland.

The rocky area soars hundred of metres above the Lowveld, giving way to spectacular views from lofty vantages points such as God's Window.

With a name like 'God's Window', you may be sceptical whether the place itself can live up to such a moniker. However, on your first time seeing this incredible natural sight, there is no other way to describe it. Sitting at a lofty elevation of just under 2,000 metres, it's easy to have the impression that you are hovering above the verdant stretch of land below.

Your bird's eye view is complete with a blanket of fluffy cloud on overcast days, or a piercing view that stretches into the mountainous horizon. You might even catch a glimpse of Kruger National Park to the north, one of the continent's largest game reserves.

Getting to God's Window

God's Window is accessible by bike, hike, or a scenic drive along the Panoramic Route. You can also look forward to it as part of our Grand Tour of South Africa, where we take you on a once in a lifetime adventure from Johannesburg to Cape Town, as well as the Highlights of Africa tour that sees you through Kruger, Swaziland and the Serengeti en route to Victoria Falls.
