With gorilla permit fees recently doubling in cost in Rwanda, an alternative, and more affordable option, is to fly into Rwanda and then transfer north, the six hours by road, to Uganda. A stay at Clouds Gorilla Mountain Lodge affords easy access to six gorilla families who live in nearby Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Located in the southern part of the park, Clouds has seven stone cottages with huge bathrooms, a lounge and fireplace and a spacious patio with views over the stunning Virungas.

Trekking may be fairly strenuous with treks up to six hours or longer, at high altitudes, not uncommon. Also, mountain gorillas are wild animals, and, as such sightings cannot be guaranteed. However viewing success rates are over 95%. Minimum age 15 years.

Day 1 - Bwindi Forest National Park
On arrival at Kigali Airport you will be met by members of the Primate Safari’s team. Enjoy the Tour of the City of Kigali and the Genocide Memorial Museum. Lunch will be at a local restaurant in Kigali.
Thereafter depart on a scenic drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. The journey North passes through the beautiful terraced hillsides that characterize much of Rwanda’s landscape and gradually climb to the base of the Virunga Volcanoes to Cyanika border crossing to enter Uganda and continue to Bwindi Forest National Park through the ‘Switzerland of Africa’ with its winding roads, and many hills and valleys all with a distant views of the Volcanoes and lakes.
Arrive at your lodge in the afternoon to freshen up followed by leisure for the rest of the afternoon. (LD)Accommodation: 2 night Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge.High on the Nteko Ridge, above the swirling clouds and the deep emerald Impenetrable Bwindi Forest, where the rare and wonderful mountain gorillas of Uganda make their home, lies a luxury retreat for visitors to the national park.
Guests at Clouds stay in their own cottage, built of local volcanic stone, every cottage has a large sitting room with fireplace, vast overstuffed armchairs and hand-woven carpets. Each individual cottage features the work of one of Uganda’s most respected artists.Day 2 - Bwindi Forest National Park
An early morning will see you off on a chance of a lifetime experience of tracking the mountain gorillas of Uganda. A professional guide will lead you along searching for these gentle giants, but be prepared for a long trek as they aren’t always easy to find. The trek will prove well worth it when you see these marvellous creatures in their natural habitat. Return to the Lodge for lunch followed by leisure in the afternoon. (BLD)
Day 3 – Kigali
Today you may choose to go for another Gorilla or Golden Monkey trek (subject to permits being available). Lunch will be at the lodge before departing and crossing back into Rwanda and returning to Kigali. On arrival you will be transferred to your hotel for check-in. Dinner will be your own arrangement. Accommodation: 1 night Kigali Serena Hotel.Situated in Central Kigali, the ambassadorial and commercial heart of Rwanda and the city’s pre-eminent meeting place for diplomats and business people. The hotel is situated only 10 km from Kigali International Airport. The accommodation comprises of 104 air-conditioned rooms from the Presidential suite, luxury suites to deluxe rooms. The elegant Diplomat Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, while The Lounge Bar offers a choice of three purpose designed areas: the bar, the lounge and the terrace.
Day 4 - End of Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge Tour
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before being transferred to Kigali International Airport for your onward journey. (B)
