This week long safari includes chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest National Park and visits Rwanda’s lesser-visited regions. Explore Akagera National Park, home to a variety of wildlife and Lake Kivu, Rwanda’s largest lake and one of the African Great Lakes. With a choice of Classic or Superior accommodation, this safari is a perfect add-on to one of our gorilla trekking adventures.
Day 1 - Akagera National Park
On arrival at Kigali international Hotel you will be met and transferred to Akagera National Park, approximately 2 hours.
Enter the national park for evening game viewing. Akagera, is set at a relatively low altitude on the border with Tanzania; Akagera National Park is dominated scenically by a labyrinth of swamps and lakes that follow the meandering course of the Akagera River. (LD)
Akagera Game Lodge has an attractive setting on a ridge overlooking Lake Ihema. The surrounding area has a wealth of big game and other wildlife on the open savannah, protected wood land, deep valley and Lakes. Day 2 - Akagera National Park
After an early breakfast you will enter the park for game drives and activities. (BLD)
Akagera is home to a variety of game, and an exciting reserve in which to spend a few days. It offers an interesting contrast to the more mountainous central and western parts of Rwanda. There are plenty of animals around and the birdlife is quite exceptional. Mammals include a healthy population of elephant and buffalo, plus 11 species of antelope including impala, common duiker, defassa waterbuck, bushbuck, oribi, tsessebe, cape eland and the rare sable antelope. Hippos are present in impressive numbers in the lakes and rivers and zebra and giraffe still roam the more open acacia dotted plains. After game viewing return to the lodge.
Day 3 - Kigali
After breakfast you will return to Kigali and check in to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure.(B)

Enjoy the location in the central business district and the breathtaking views over the hills of Kigali. Indulge yourself in culinary experiences from casual to fine dining, from international cuisine to local signature dishes.
Day 4 - Nyungwe Forest National Park
Depart Kigali after breakfast you will make your way to Nyungwe National Park via the Kings Museum in Nyanza and Butare for a visit to the National Museum with a stop for lunch. (BLD)
Nyungwe National Park is at an altitude range of between 1,600 – 2,950 M above sea level with temperatures varying between 0°C and 30° C; average day temperatures 15°C. Main features and attractions in Nyungwe Forest include the largest montane rain forest remaining in Africa, Mt. Bigugu (2925M) and Kamiranzovu Marsh (13 Km²). Nyungwe Forest has 260 species of trees and shrubs and over 100 species of orchids and giant lobelias.
Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel is idyllically situated on top of one of the hills of Nyungwe forest area; the largest single forest block in East Africa and the biggest water reservoir for Rwanda.
Day 5 - Nyungwe Forest National Park
Depart after an early breakfast for a hike into Nyungwe Forest in search of chimps (chimp trek permit additional cost). There is a lot more in Nyungwe than just chimps. Colobus monkeys, mangabeys, various other primate species plus lots of forest dwelling birds will be encountered on the way. Enjoy lunch at the lodge. (BLD)
This afternoon you can decide to do an optional Canopy Walk (at own expense) or just relax at the hotel.
Day 6 - Lake Kivu
After breakfast drive to Kibuye by the lake shores of the Lake Kivu. Lake Kivu is one of the greatest Lakes in Rwanda, and is in the Albertine (western) Rift, a part of the Great Rift Valleys. The lake is a 2,650 Square kilometre freshwater expanse and the largest of all the lakes that fill the valleys of Rwanda. (BLD)

Day 7 - End of Rwanda Explored Tour
After Breakfast, enjoy the scenic drive back to Kigali Airport for your onward journey. (B)

Trekking may be fairly strenuous with treks up to six hours or longer, at high altitudes, not uncommon. Also, mountain gorillas are wild animals, and, as such sightings cannot be guaranteed. However viewing success rates are over 95%. Minimum age 15 years.
